The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Papaver somniferum

Aug. 5' 4˚ P.m. removed bloom from 5 young pods & peduncles in greenhouse & marked with white wool. Also 5 pods of nearly same size marked with black thread for comparing

Some large & some small — removed bloom with damp sponge. —

Aug 7th 12˚ 35. I find all 3 pods with much bloom on them; cleaned them carefully again with brush under stigma.

12˚ 40' cleaned a 4th pod; marked with black & white wool.

Aug. 9th 10˚ 45. one of the pods which was recleaned on the 7th at 12˚. 35', has now some bloom on it again, as I wiped it, & made a green stripe.

Aug. 13th One Pod white wool has nearly as much bloom, as those which have never been rubbed; a second has a good deal

Aug 5. 5˚ P.m. Marked 4 & 4 in same way on plants out of doors.

August 7th some bloom had returned for when I rubbed pod with finger much greener, but not so much as in Greenhouse)

(—Aug 8th 8 A.m Recleaned 3 of pods, (& left 1 others in former state) marked black & white wool): also cleaned 2 fresh pods, white wool & black thread.—

[143v]

Ether instantly removed bloom; waving for 1' in water at 104° did not do so. —

(Aug 19th 2 of pods with white wool have now so much bloom it cd hardly be told that the bloom had ever been wiped off. — The bloom not nearly so well removed on plants out of doors)

Aug. 29th 4˚ P.m In greenhouse there are six pods with bloom removed & more or less renewed & stigma & peduncle was at same time cleaned, & now the radiating stigmatic surfaces are brown, whilst all those of uncleaned pods are pale green. But it very odd that the pods on plant s out of doors have their stigmas, both cleaned & uncleaned equally dry.

I rather suspect peduncles of those out of doors are rather browner. —

Sept. 21. compared pods, not perfectly mature, in greenhouse & out of doors, which had been cleaned & with bloom — perhaps peduncles a shade browner.

Put those on plant out of doors to dry in window — white wool cleaned pods.
