The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Mahonia ripe, purple or almost ripe

Aug 7th 10 berries cleaned & 11 with bloom, syringed —

Aug 11' 8˚ 30' The cleaned ones almost all indented & looking very poor compared with those with bloom

Aug 14th I punctured one of each kind no difference in colour of juice.—

Aug 16th. Of the cleaned 6 with juice brown & 4 purple red but not so bright as that of the uncleaned— all 11 of which had bright red juice. But when the juice on paper was dry, not one of the 4 was bright red, whereas only 3 of those with bloom showed a slight brown tint.

Aug 7th 10 berries cleaned & 11 with bloom to be left to dry. not one w

― 17 Hardly any difference — perhaps 2 or 3 of cleaned a I cut one of each lot into two & certainly more juice still abundant in one with bloom shade fairer

― 19' cut open another pair, I think more juice in that with bloom

21' F. cut open 2 cleaned berries no visible juice; whereas 1 with bloom had plenty of juice

23' F cut open remainder— of those with bloom 7 moist & 1 dry.

"of the cleaned all a little moist, & only "just drier" then those with bloom". He thinks certainly rather drier, but difference slight.— (over)

[144v]

Bloom remarkably coherent, difficult to remove, with tepid sponge — removed by almost instantly by immersion in Ether — waving for 1' in water at 116° did not receive much of bloom.—

(F. has examined under highest powers, excessively minute crowded points of matter instantly removed by Ether.)
