Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Sea Kale fruits oval pods

Aug. 7th 11˚ 15 Pods silvery & bloom very easily rubbed off.— most of pods more or less gnawed or imperfect.— flower-peduncle with bloom.—

6 + 6 to be syringed & Aug 12 no difference many mouldy

Sept 5' 3 of the cleaned pods rotten, more or less & thrown away

― 9' 3 of the pods with bloom half rotten

― 12 If any difference the 3 remaining pods with bloom, look in a worse state than the remaining 3 cleaned ones

Aug 7. 11˚. 15. 4 3? & 4 3? to be dryed.

12 8˚ I think the cleaned a little more wrinkled. 13th do

(Also 2 in salt water & 2 in fresh.)

Aug. 14. The cleaned certainly more wrinkled.

― 19th I cut them all open & the green rather fleshy coat certainly rather drier of the cleaned pods

Aug. 15. 8˚ 30' The 2 in salt water now yellowish (those in fresh water quite green) & now floating whilst those in f. w. are still sunk; therefore I suppose former have generated gas. 16 still yellow-brown, whilst those in f. w. quite green — thrown away

Aug 21. 11˚ 30' F cleaned 22 pods & left 18 with bloom on

24th The cleaned ones more wrinkled

25 do

27th I rather doubt about wrinkling — cut 2 open no difference in dryness

Sept 2d I cut open one of each cd perceive no difference

― 8' Cut all pods into twain

Of the cleaned 12 seeds were green & 9 yellow

Of those with bloom 12 green & 4 yellowish

(No difference to trust in)
