The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. large var. much larger more glaucous leaves much larger podsgrowing naturalised in corn-field

Aug 9th 9˚ A.m

3 + 3 to be syringed

Aug 18' one with bloom dark brown, I do not know whether rotting or ripening

Aug 25 — The 3 Heads with bloom have clearly rotten before the 3 which were cleaned

Aug— 9 9˚ Am

2 + 2 to be left to dry

— 14' 9˚ 1 of the cleaned ones began to blacken become very dark brown & now 15th is so all over.

Aug 25 no difference between the 2 lots
