Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug 13th 9˚ 30' — Cleaned both surfaces of 3 leaves Blue dots on margin.

Aug 30th bloom not renewed

Sept 22d a little renewed, especially on under sides of leaves: sponged the leaves again

Nov. 22 I can see no injury to cleaned leaves. —

Feb 15 1 (78) do.
