The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Sea Kale youngish Pods

in 3 Bottles — Bloom poor on pods

Aug 18th 3˚ P.m.

10 cleaned in salt

10 with bloom in Salt

10 cleaned in Fresh-water.

Aug 25. There can be no doubt that the pods in F.W look far greener than those in salt. w. — But of the 2 lots in salt-water very little difference, perhaps those which were cleaned are of a browner-yellowish tint. — It will be safer to say no difference.—
