Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Taken out at 12 (Red wafer hot; green wafer cold.)

In the cold water the leaves are a dull green in blotches

In hot water an orang[e] brown, very marked difference. Ones in hot v Hot solution of pale yellow. Cold solution colourless. Hot sol. most acid, by litmus paper. Hot sol. much most taste.
