The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Lupinus mutabilis

Aug 28th. 11˚ 30' these well protected with bloom, easily rubbed off— put on sponge & gutta percha.

Sept 11' sponge removed — no effect red wool

Oct 30 there are some brown marks, but of course it cannot be positively said that due to sponge

I doubt altogether

Vallota Sept 12th. 10˚. 50'

Flower-peduncle flower just opening — well covered with bloom, sponged it & fixed on sponge.

Sept. 24th brown spots all round, considerably injured

― 28. Peduncle now withering —the spots are bright red, such occur only where sponge rested —not only epidermis it is the tissue immediately underlying epidermis which is thus coloured. —
