Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Protected under neath side of leaves by fine t wool

Put in at 85° wool was dry when taken out & shaken. —

Put 26 Rue-leaf 87 to 86 beautifully silvery on both sides in old cold water watch for 1h quite wetted on upper side & silver partly gone, but still quite silvery on lower side & dry when taken out

The protected leaves of Red Beet dipped in cold water not silvery & yet are only imperfectly wetted, immerse for 1h in water about 85° seemed to make no plain difference

White Dutch Clover lower surface of leaves beautiful silvery immerse for 1h 84 1/2 to 83 1/2 no effect

95°-94° for 1h silver partially & largely gone & surface much wetted
