Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Put into water at 75° waved about for 1m & was then speckled with water.—
At 86° after one minute it was quite wetted.
Before-hand it appeared quite silvery in water at 64° when dipped in & was dry when taken out.—
