Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Cabbage

Small piece of cabbage leaf dipped into water at

100° was thoroughly wetted in a few seconds both top & bottom

95° waved about for 40" in water abt. 1/2 upper surface about 1/2 was wetted to under surface very little wetted

91° waved for 30 minutes sec upper surface nearly wetted all over under also nearly all over

85° waved about 1m 45 sec upper slightly, under less wetted.

75° waved for 3 minutes upper surface with a few drops sticking under quite dry

64° waved for 3m both surfaces quite dry
