Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug 11' (73) Wetting of fruit & Leaves

Raspberry, Plums, Mahonia Pea-pods (very perfectly) protected when dipped in water by beautiful glass-case, & Kidney Beans owing to Hairs — Gooseberry, red & Black Currants wetted & Mountain ash not quite ripe. Peas very slightly protected, (I remember coucumbers are so)

Pyrus japonicus imperfectly— The scarlet flowered Currant acts thick Bloom. —so 2 sp. of Ribes very different

Aug 11 — 1873

As far as I can judge about 1/2 leaves of all kinds after much fine rain, have water more or less in globules on leaves. — Pelargonium most wetted of all leaves

Honeysuckle, Thorn, apples, plum plum, Mimulus luteus, Laurels partially, (though so polished) Berbers Darwinii, Rhododendron, Kidney bean, Spinach— Currant— Rhubarb—, Horse-radish, Ivy, (though polished).

Fig, Lettuce (partially), a kind of rose silvery open under side wetted above. —

Sunday 10th put on drops on cabbage leaf often rubbing away the blooms

Monday 11th 9˚. A.m. rubbed of bloom of top of 1/2 ripe plum & put on drop of water. — Kept putting on fresh drops.

Monday 11. 12˚ rubbed of bloom of pea-pod & put on drop of water.
