Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Lower side of leaves alone of what Burdock (Arctium lappa) of Service tree (Pyrus aria) & of a willow in Sandwalk well protected, (so as to be finely silvery when immersed) by matted very fine hairs —
Upper surface more or less wetted. — (artichoke both surfaces)
