The volume CUL-DAR67 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

1882 Jan 26'. These were the leaflets on wh. water rested in July last & 12 of which have just been recorded as yellower now Jan 26 [sketch]

5 have dropped off on A

3 ― on B

1' ― on C

Jan. 30th 1 more off B

Feb. 3 1 more at B

Feb. 5th 1 more dropped off C. Therefore 12 out of 18 have now dropped off, & some on. whereas the leaflets near tips of all adjoining pinnæ still remain on & are green. —

15 A all 5 B all 5. 3 on C. = 15 out of 18 dropped.

Feb 15th a great many leaflets have fallen off or are turned yellower over whole large leaf, but the terminal leaflet on both sides of the 2 or 3 pinnæ on each side of A, B, C are still quite green & firmly on leaf. —

Feb 19th now a few leaflets near tips of adjoining pinnæ have turned yellow; but none dropped. off. —

1882

Acacia lophantha

Jan 21. It is very curious that all 6 leaflets on the 3 pinnæ, on which drops of water rested are conspicuously yellower than the other leaflets on the same pinnæ & than the opposite leaflets (from which many dropped) from which bloom removed.

There are, however, on the same huge compound leaf, other leaflets on other pinnæ in the same state of yellowness. — The leaflets on which drops rested cannot now close well when illuminated by sun.—

Case very curious, seeing that sponges & drops pressed on on July 25'. 1881. — ie 6 months before!! — No doubt or probably if exposed to rain subsequently wd have suffered more, as it has never been syringed since July — 4˚. 30 P.m these same leaflets far less asleep than the others on same & adjoining pinnæ; but later at night according to F. went well to sleep.

Jan 24. I now find that only 12/18 of the leaflets are yellowish, on the 3 pinnae whereas none except those on the same or adjoining one pinna are yellowish.
