Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. It wd be advisable to cross-fertilise with pollen from distinct plants the seedlings raised from the less fertile — also to self-fertilise with pollen from shorter stamens both lots of Plants.
