The volume CUL-DAR67 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Ripe Grapes Frank (cleaned)

10 cleaned with warm water Oct 7' 10˚ 45' & on Oct 9th 10˚ 30' taken out & died dried till 3˚ P.m on same day & then put int tank water & ten with bloom treated in same way

Oct 13' 2 of each lot burst.

It is difficult to be sure about bursting & I think the stalk apt to separate a little.

Oct 15 2 of each lot burst — stalk certainly separate

16— 1 cleaned burst

Oct 18 1 of cleaned burst, 3 unburst

4 of those with bloom unburst} threw away

Oct 10 F Cleaned 10 grapes with wash-leather & 10 with sponge & tepid water; not one of either lot burst on Oct 18' & I then threw away!!!)
