Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Oxalis Valdiviana. (March 6-7 1878) 2 seedlings, 1 quite young & the other older. Cotyledon horizontal or in older one deflexed below horizon; For movement of Cots at 10˚ 15' P.m. vertical & almost closed: at 7˚ a.m next morning horizontal & older one beneath horizon. — No bloom, though so small water does not adhere very well, [Sensitive]; not sensitive to being rubbed with needle.

March 9th 10˚ P.m. Same 2 seedlings — cots at rt ∟' at 4˚ 30' perfectly closed at 10˚ P.m. Perfect sleep. (over)

The Cots of seedlings observed on March 6 perfectly asleep & the first little true leaf asleep with pe leaflets dependent, — whilst cots raised & shut & embracing the half of 2 of the 3 leaflets. (Use) ((Bloom))
