Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Trifolium resupinatum strictum (March 6th 1878) F. observed that Cots. stood up almost vertically & almost & I observed last night with rather older Cots, with vestige of true leaf between closed greatly & were open again at 7˚ 8 a. m. an older seedling with well developed true leaf did not sleep move much

No. bloom on them. Cots First true leaf single orbicular well protected by bloom. on both sides

March 21. 1878

First true tripartite leaf on seedling Leaflets Hairy, no differences in bloom on under side of lateral leaflets. —

March 2d. Second true leaf— lateral leaflets bloom on whole under surface

April 13th The 7th true leaf no difference in bloom on under side.—

May 14th Plants now 4 or 5 inches across with 2 or 3 scores of leaves, but no difference in bloom on under side of lateral leaflets

May 27th young leaf no difference in the bloom on 2 sides of leaf

Jun 18th youngest leaves, one yet fully-grown on both plants tested & bloom perfect on lateral leaflets on both sides.
