The volume CUL-DAR67 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

July 17 / 1881. Smithia Pfundii

Syringed for 4' from beneath with water at 90° & leaflets rose a little, but then pressure was from below — rubbing pulvini of leaflets with needle caused very slight upward & forward movement —

Leaflets both sides protected with bloom.—

July 12' syringed from above leaf for 4' with water at 90° on plant out of hot case, & leaflets certainly rose a little & moved a little forwards or towards apex of leaf. —

July 23d — 2 Plants — 2 leaves on each plant; prepared by w 6 on each leaf (posteriorly to cut off one on each side) by washed with camel-Brush with water at 10° till leaflet well wetted. —

So altogether 12 leaflets (on right-side viewed from apex) with drops of water on, & 12 l washed leaflets with no drops. — Plants in case quite free — leaflets not pinned — Leaflets occasionally dry & occasionally wet — Leaves marked on one plant red wool on other yellow wool.

Drops put on at 11˚. 30' a.m 23d (over)

(Smithia)

Aug 2d no effect — Drops temporarily discontinued after morning of 3d till 5th (2 days intermission)

Aug 15th I fancy that most of the leaves which have been wetted look a shade browner.

Sept. 7th I ceased putting on water, which has been continued at first 4 or 5 times & latterly 3 times daily.

Sept 11th The 12 leaves thus treated have been but little injured, yet somewhat injured, as they look a little yellower than the 12 opposite leaflets from which bloom was removed, but have not been at all wetted. —

Oct 10th of '6 of the leaflets now conspicuously yellower than the opposite cleaned ones, on which no water had been out.

3 slightly yellower than do

2 only a trace yellower

1 not at all yellower

Oct 12th. on one leaf, leaflets on both sides fallen off on 2d leaf. 2 which had water fallen off, not opposites

Oct 28 During absence of 2 days almost all leaflets fallen off & I can tell nothing.
