Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. 1881.

Phyllanthus consanguineus

July 26th Drops put on at 9˚ a.m. — Plant in hot case quite free — leaflets not pinned

6 pairs of leaflets on 3d leaf from top & 4 pairs on 5th leaf from top well sponged with water at 96° (making 10 pairs) drops put on right-hand leaflet viewed from apex.

Leaflet after sponging only greasy. — Drops allowed often to dry.

Aug 2d. no effect. Drops temp. discontinued after morning of 3d until 5th (2 days intermission.)

Aug. 6th The leaves, those with drops of water & those without very much freckled with white marks (I know not cause) & the freckles are browner on the leaves with drops — no other difference)

Aug 6' Upper leaf Branch one leaflet with drops fell off on touch & when held to light many brown spaces see throughout leaf. — 7th another leaf dropped

Aug 8th Plant frightfully unhealthy from red Spider. — I cannot see that leaves with drops at all more unhealthy than opposite sponged ones. —
