The volume CUL-DAR67 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Linum grandiflorum (Conclusions)

Flowers on plants in garden were fertilised between July 18th & Oct Aug' 1 1881. — Afterward the weather was wet & cold & very unfavourable for the setting of the Pods.

Several short-styled plants were carefully protected from insects & on successive days 25 flowers were illegitimately fert. with pollen from the shorter stamens of other distinct short-styled plants in a distinct group of short-styled plants. Therefore they had though illegitimately fertilised all the advantages derived from cross-fertilisation—

These 25 flowers yielded only 3 pods so that 12 per cent yielded pods of which one contained no good seeds; & the other 2 fl. yielded 6 & 1 good seed i.e. 8 per cent yielded good seed. — i.e on average 3.5 seed per pod. —

At the the same times 15 flowers on short-styled plant were legitimately fert. with pollen from long-styled.

These yielded no less than 14 pods, i.e. 98 per cent but of these 5 contained no seeds, appearing good. The 9 ie 60 per cent which contained q good or nearly a quite or moderately good seeds in æ

appearance, contained as here shown, ie on an average per pod 8.66 seeds.

[calculations not transcribed]

(March. 20' 1882. seeds put on damp sand — one of the illegitimate & perhaps 2 utterly bad & worthless ought not to be counted.)

March 31', 6 of the Legitimates have germinated well — not 1 of Illegitimate
