Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Both Gärtner & Kölreuter have found that in genera of plants including numerous species, a series can be formed of from species which yield when crossed fewer & fewer seeds, & at last to species which never produce a single seed, but yet are affected by the pollen of the other species, for the germen swells. It is here manifestly impossible to select the more sterile individuals, which have already ceased when crossed to yield a single seeds, so that the acme of sterility, when the germen alone is affected, should be gained through selection. This acme, & no doubt the other grades of sterility,
