The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

A

Marsilea quadrifolia

July 11th 9° Am rubbed 1 leaflet of upper leaf with sponge & water at 90° F. & rubbed 1 leaflet with pumice powder for short time. This latter operation made water adhere well. — Both marked white thread.

Surfaces of leaves with few thinly scattered no Hairs not enough to case silver — Surface covered with sinuous lines of apparently Secretion. (Try Ether & warm water)

(July 13th. 8° A.m. rubbed with pumice & water a leaf rather longer to see if injured & left dry Black wool.)

(July 13th I see brown streak on the lower leaf with water which was rubbed with pumice)

(July 15 & 16th. I find that water is not squeezed out by the leaflets going to sleep for there was some on during both mornings)

(July 25' There is not least effect on leaf, which day & night has had water on it since the 11th & the leaf which was rubbed with pumice & then had water on it is not browner than that leaf which was simply rubbed. —

(B

1877 Marsilea (Sleep)

2 of 4 leaflets first rise up & approach each other & then bend down, so as ultimately to bend down on one side almost vertically — The other 2 leaves rise & approach each other & move downwards in the same direction as the first pair, when they clasp, so that the 4 leaflets make a dep single dependent bundle. — when awake the 4 leaflet lie horizontally in the same plane. [sketch]

Nature of Surface

Ether removes silver instantly & then water wets surface — waving leaf for 1' in water at 93° upper surface still silvery, lower slightly wetted.

C

July 16th 8° 30' Marsilea

The upper leaf with water not in least injured; the lower leaf which had been rubbed & then with water on it in same state as leaf which was rubbed on the 13th & left dry.

Drop of water now placed on latter leaf.
