The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

July 12

Ricinus communis

11° A.m. Beautiful bloom on petioles; removed some from young leaf & made a cup with modelling wax & filled with distilled water. (N.B on petioles curious little foliaceous collars with gland in middle which secretes fluid; I am nearly sure nectar.)

(Cup does not hold water well)

(15th I find it has not got to hold water well.

(July 20th 11° A.m as cup did not hold water well stuffed bits of sponge in which I will keep wet. —)

(Aug 2d took off sponge — petiole not affected.)
