Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. July 13' 8° 15' a.m. By sponging backwards & forwards made upper surface of leaf quite wet & so left it — White wool.
July 19th 8° leaf yellowish
July 20th 11° A.m. — sponged 2 other perfect green leaves with cold water. — until the [illeg] to repel water Black wool
July 24th 11° A.m. These 2 leaves now look very slightly yellowish. —
July 26' decidedly yellow & much injured. Evidence sufficient. —
