Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. July 13th

Fennel

10° 30' cleaned bloom off a stem not very high up for bloom thicker on lower internodes & placed wet sponge surrounded by gutta-percha sheet. (N.B leaves & petioles are well wetted by cold water, no bloom.)

July 18th 9° A.m. tied sponge & gutta percha round another stem, having wiped off bloom— further plant from House

July 23d after long rain I find stem with many drops of water on them, but not whole surface wetted.)

(July 28' The older stem July 13 1 or 2 little brown specks — the other stem no effect. — White wool.)
