Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Arachis hypogæa

upper surface slightly silvery — lower surface not so: after sponging with water at 85° silver lost, but upper & lower surface still repellent — 2 whole leaflet sponged & drops placed on at 12° 15'

July 29th — took off water — not a trace of effect.

― 30th at night perfectly asleep. —

Aug 3d syringed for 2' with water at 85°, no movement
