The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Nelumbium speciosum.

Silver instantly removed by Ether & surface only slightly repellent. — sponged with water at 96° still somewhat repellent— rubbed with pumice still slight repellence— Leaf forms a saucer.

July 19. 11°

Sponged near side near centre & above with water at 94°-95° & rubbed opposite side with pumice.

N.B. As water at 94°-95° trickled off leaf left a white trail which almost instantly soon disappeared.

July 20th The same appearance seen today— Is not caused by cold water. — Due no doubt to warmth of water temporary rendering more cle transparent the little particles of wax. — for warm poker held near caused same appearance, which was either temporary or permanent if held for some time, & in this latter case wax cd be seen to have run into a sheet. Ether re dissolves & then redeposit the wax, & afterwards surface studded with minute points whence the wax dissolved.)

(July 28th The space which was rubbed with pumice very brown; & the space which was sponged with tepid water yellowish & veins brownish, but this only where water had lain, for other parts, beautifully green; I shd say plant sickly.)
