The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

(A

Cotyledon 2 sp. & Kleinia

July 20th 9° A.m. Profuse bloom removed & drops of water placed on cleaned spaces.

(The bloom so profuse on C. pulverulentum that if touched finger whitened; both surfaces; do removed by Ether & redeposited round margins — Silvery in water —Bloom lies in ridges like ploughed field.)

(July 14th 9° A.m. One leaf of Cot. pulverulentum had end broken off & decay has spread. So cleaned larger space on young leaf & put pot obliquely.

(July 26th 9° brushed with camel-brush & then sponged bloom from half of leaf, to see if sun affected green; but as bloom as thick on lower side, I do not think use can be as bad conductor of heat or to keep off light.

Also cleaned minute spot to put on globule on first bright day—

(July 28 Cot. pulverulentum 9° brown specks on both places where water has lain, most on midribs which many leaves have slightly abraded by sponge. (Trace of browning on the other sp. of Cotyledon?) (over)

[120v]

Cot. pulverulentum

Aug. 8th 9° Water has produced no effect whatever, but exposure to light slight reddened the surface; but in older leaves, from which bloom not removed, the surface reddens in patches — But there can be no doubt that exposure to light does redden the surface.

Aug 8th 9°

(Cot. bracteosum — where bloom slightly redden, no effect from water)

do) Kleinia ficoides no effect from water, but water wd not remain well on leaves —

N.B The bloom wd protect leaves from heat as well as light — A Heavy shower wd wash leaves clean, so friable is the bloom —

(B

Cotyledon pulverulentum

Aug 2d 8° 30' cleaned distal 1/4 of young leaf with small camel-hair— surface quite green to see effects of light

Cot. bracteosum. Aug 2d. 8° 30' Cleaned 1/2 leaf with damp sponge to see effect of light —
