Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Eucalyptus globulus

July 24th 9° Clean space near base of leaf on top of shoot & put on some drops of water.

(N.B no difference in old leaf wh on which water rested; or in leaf which had both surfaces cleaned. — Can bloom protect from insects or parasitic fungi.)

July 25' 11° A.m. removed bloom from one side of the quadrilateral axis. near summit, where bloom very thick & tied on bot of sponge, with no gutta percha. —

(N.B July 26 Compared leaf which was cleaned in June with a bit of opposite leaf from which I cleaned bloom to see if any difference in the greenness & there was none; yet close near to roof of House & during last month much bright sun.)

Aug 8th 9° no effect on leaf with drop of water since the 24th — quadrilateral axis colour not altered, but a few minute brown specks. —
