Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug. 11° leaves beautifully silvery both sides, rigid & glaucous

4 leaves whole upper surface cleaned — drops of pure water on. —

Aug 13th The water has produced no effect

(― 16 Surface covered with conical projections & these roughened with such minute points that only just visible with 2d object glass: after ether all disappear.)
