The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

[138]

Nov. 7th Lotus ornithopopoides

Syringed with water at about 90° with Ether spray for 2' but caused no closing of leaves

Nov. 8th 12° 30' put leaflet under dripping machine —Height of drip 10 1/2 inches.—

Nov. 21st The leaf (ie after 13 days, but during 1 day the drip was forgotten by accident) is now badly infiltrated, & on moving the plant, it & an adjoining one dropped off being evidently killed. — It is surprising that so delicate a leaf shd have resisted the dripping, with no appearance of injury for at least 10 or 11 days. —
