Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug 1st. 10° A.m right side of 4 smallest leaves sponged on both sides

at 10° P.m. the right sides not crumpled

Aug 2d 8° A.m.— no doubt right-sides much crumpled & brighter green.

Aug 4th Leaves quite dry, the cleaned side is more & much more finely shrivelled & is brighter green owing to removal of bloom
