Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Sept 2d 5° P.m some of leaves I think a little drier on right-side

Sept 3d 8° A.m right sides of most of leaves decidedly feel rougher & rather drier than other— Put branch in tepid water 7° 57'

Tropæolum minus & tuberosum

right-hand side both surfaces cleaned: hung to dry.

T. tuberosum. 30th 8° A m. much withered, right side more crumpled & darker-coloured & plainly drier. —

(T. minus. 31' A.m — right-side blotched with yellow & different appearance, perhaps drier. Sept 1 right side conspicuously yellower & in 2 of the leaves much more crumpled—
