The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

[156]

Nicotiana glauca

Aug. 29' 5° P.m— 3 large leaves right-side both surfaces sponged

(Sept 7th 9 1 leaf both surfaces withered & neither dry Sept 10 there can be no doubt right side the dryest.)

(Sept 9' 2d leaf with right side yellowish—

Sept 11', conspicuously yellower (—12th) & all shrivelled

A third leaf (Sept 16') has left side!!! much drier & shrivelled than other — It is enough to make one suspect that wrong side cleaned (I have lo placed leaves in water & there has been no error the side with bloom has dried & shrivelled first)!
