Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Acacia cultriformis

Sept. 20' 5° 15' P.m.

2 twigs of nearly equal size all leaflets sponged so that bloom removed & hung up to dry. —

Sept 24th basal leaves of cleaned feel drier in morning F. & L. tried leaves blindfolded & picked out instantly the cleaned as driest, feeling base of twig.

Sept 25 9° a.m. The leaves on the cleaned twigs are now cracking to apex. —

Twigs 4 1/2 inches on length.

Put into candle & the d cleaned burnt quickest— Leaves on phylloid of cleaned drop off when handled. —

No doubt whatever.
