The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. When there is no bloom on either side, about half of them species have all stomata below. Of the other half the greater number have most of the stomata below.

O/B 39 sp

When there is bloom only on the undersurface about 8/10 of the species have stomata only below

B/B 62 sp

When bloom on both sides, more than half the species have most more stomata above than below; only 0.3 of whole number of species have all the stomata below

B/O 10 sp

When bloom only below above the tendency to have more stomata above than below is still better marked
