Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Cauliflower seedlings green Vine House

(Cotyledon)

Feb. 20' noon— put drops of salt-water on both Cots. of 6 seedlings, some younger & some older, but none with any true leaf however small — marked with sticks. —)

Feb. 21. 4° P. m. 4 Cotyledons have been killed!! not both in any case on the same plant. —

Feb. 22d. 1 whole seedling bowed over & 1/2 dead but may I think not be due to s. water. —

Feb 22 I put salt water on only 1 Cot. of 2 seedlings & marked with pins

Feb. 25' noon— one seedling killed & I have no doubt due to salt

― 28th Frank reports in single Cot. on 2 small seedlings, & 1 Cot on big seedling injured.; but so many other plants prostrate & shaking off that these observations not trustworthy
