Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. 2 seedlings no bloom on Cots or on first true hairy leaves.—

12° 15' put on salt-water on one cot of each by little stick. —

Feb. 23d 4° P.m Cot. killed

Feb. 25th both these cots. are killed.

noon the other Cot on other plant is killed.

March 6' The 2d plant, which alone is alive, seem pretty well, though it has now only 1 cotyledon.
