Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Red Cabbage Cotyledon Salt-water

March 11th. 12° — put drops on 1 cotyledon of 5 6 seedlings, (marked with sticks) but salt-water drops ran down to centre of smaller seedlings.

March 13th. 2 or 3 of the Cots. badly injured & flabby.

March 14th 8° a.m examined carefully 4 killed outright & these are small seedlings so that salt water run on axi bud— 2 larger seedlings with only 1 Cot. killed & the other & central bud look healthy

March 14th 8° 15' put salt-water on one Cot. alone of 6 & 4 other fresh seedlings, of good size. —

March 14. 4° P.m 1 cot; dead (I suppose must have been punctured by some insects

March 16' 7° a m. one Cot. quite dead.

― 23 7° a.m one Cot. dead

25 7° ― do. do.

25 2 other seedlings with the Cot, which had salt-water not in the least injured; ie after 11 days — It seems that, though without bloom are moderately protected from salt-water.
