The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Elymus arenarius

July 28' 9° 5' after sponging a space of 4 leaves put on fresh- pure water on 2, & salt water on two.

Of the latter one was well involuted at 11° 30; & the other at 4°.

July 29th 9° 1 leaf with pure water is dying

(B) ― 8° 15' 1 of the leaves with salt-water had almost opened so; but by 10° 30' had again become involuted. Even pure water causes some involution.

July 30th 9° Both leaves with salt closely involuted & yellowish & I do not doubt killed

(July 31st 9° completely yellow & dead.)

July 30 9° — Cut off the dead leaf, & cleaned another & put on A pure pure water, it is the 2d from inside. (N. B pure water certainly causes some involution) which disappears

Aug 3d. 10° The pure water leaf seems a little browned. —

Aug 1'. 8° 30 — Clean Pinned down 2 new & uncleaned leaves & put on sphere spheres of salt-water; in a hour or two leaf closed & at 4° 30 opened again. Also a leaf with pure water which was partly closed this morning is now 4° 30 quite open.

Aug. 10 The spheres have no injured leaf in the least.

(one of the leaves with fresh water has several times become involuted & then flattened itself again)

(B

Elymus arenarius

Aug 2d. 9° 37 spheres of water on uncleaned leaf (C) on lower stage to see if will be involuted.

Aug 15. The spheres of salt-water, (though once or twice the water evaporated & crust of salt lost) have produced not the least effect.

Leaves A & B very slightly yellowish- browned where pure water lay, but I doubt whether much or at all injured. — C. not in the least affected.

Aug 18 The leaf A which was pinned down on July 30th & was freed on the Aug. 15th is now involuted & dying, so it appears that fresh-water does somewhat injure leaves. —
