Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Salicornia major macrostachya — fleshy little leaves well protected & silvery, except scales on tips

July 30th 11° 27' sponged with tepid water (white wool) & put in bottle with another branch into not sponged into salt-water

Aug 15th 9° Not the least difference between the 2 stems in salt water & the 1 in pure.

July 31' 11° 27' put a sponged branch into common water. Black wool

(Aug 31— 5° P.m

Bloom not removed— it was all gone on the branch which had been immersed in salt-water without being cleaned, except on fresh-grown tips of shoots.—)
