Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. July 30th 11° little leaves beautifully silvery on both sides cross-shaped.

cleaned with tepid sponge 3 leaves & put on salt-water — put on drops on 3 uncleaned leaves, — White wool

Aug 7th 8° 1 leaf much injured.

― 12 ― This leaf dead — the 2 others not in the least injured —

July 30' 11° — cleaned 3 leaves & put on pure water. Black wool

Aug 12th. 8° not in the least injured

New Zealand— I do not know whether a littoral Plant.
