The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

July 31' 10° 20' Suaeda fruticosa. Britain

Hooker says "sandy & pebbly beaches, glabrous rather than glaucous — Young shoot well silvery when submerged; waved for 1' in w. at 86°-85° silver somewhat removed; & then waved for 1' in water at 90°, silver quite recovered & succulent stems & leaves(?) somewhat wetted.

I cleaned one stem white wool by waving in water at 90' for 1' & then put it into sea-water, together with another (yellow wool) not cleaned into same bottle of salt-water.

Another stem (black wool) into distilled water, after having been waved as above.

Aug 15. 9° Not the least difference between the 2 stems in salt & the 1 in pure water.

(Aug 31. 5° P m. no bloom renewed; nor any (except on fresh-grown branches) on the branch which without having been cleaned had been immersed in salt-water.)
