Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Cleaned 4 more leaves with tepid sponge & put on salt-w (white thread or wool.)

(Aug 9th one leaf seems injured, & Aug 10' this leaf dead)

Aug 14. The 3 other leaves of a yellowish green.

16 Two of those leaves dead

17' The 4th leaf yellow & dying

Aug 7' 9° 15' 4 leaves black thread cleaned w pure Water. —

― 19th 9° These 4 leaves not in the least injured

July 29. 11° 35' — S Finely Beautifully silvery in water —

Sponged with tepid water 3 leaves white wool & put on salt-water

July 30th 8° 30' 1 leaf half-shut & dying

Aug 1. 12° a 2d leaf dying

4' 9. The 3d leaf drooping —

7th 8. ― do.

8th 8' ― yellower (pulled off) tips Decayed

(N. B I found it impossible on stems tied to sticks to keep spheres of salt-water on the uncleaned leaves.)

July 29' 11° 35' sponged 4 leaves & put on pure water.

Aug 12th 8°, 3 of the leaves a little injured & one of them fallen; but then I notice that 2 of the 3 had been gnawed by some minute insect, which fact I had overlooked, when selecting the leaves.

Aug 15 Epidermis with horizontal projection & whole surface curved with excessively minute short little projection, which are removed by ether — probably wax. —
