Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug 14th. 8° 35' put bunch of leaves in Bottle of fresh water.

Aug 21st tips of blades yellow

― 23d nearly all the blades yellower.

Aug 8th 9° placed one bundle of blades, slightly sponged & another bundle in bottle in salt-water, to see if they decay quicker in light. —

Cleaned blades black wool: — white uncleaned. —

Aug 12th 10° 30' — 3 leaves white wool with tips badly injured & yellow. — Black wool 2 leaves with tips yellowish. (warmth & light seem to make great difference in decay.

Aug 13th leaves considerably injured, especially tips & where bent — no difference between cleaned & uncleaned. —

July 31st 11° 15'.

cleaned several hoary & green leaves with tepid water, but not very thoroughly & immersed them in salt-water in my study for comparison with cut-off leaves.

Aug 6. 10° 50 45' several of the leaves somewhat yellowish, especially towards tips slightly injured — no marked difference between green & hory hoary leaves. — 3° P.m involuted. placed in salt water again 4° 15'.

Black wool

Aug 10' 8° A. m. leaves now all of pale very yellow green.

Aug. 7' 11° 30 2 Sea-Kale fruit— floats

Aug 7th 5° 40' 11° 30' sponged some more blades & put in bottle in fresh water — white wool (& 2 sea-Kale fruit)

Aug 14th. 8° 3 leaves considerably decayed in Study!!
