The volume CUL-DAR68 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Mertensia

Oct 19th 11° A. m. cleaned very gently with very soft sponge with tepid water 5 leaves, marked yellow wool & put on salt water.

Oct 29th 2 of the leaves on the central stem with brown specks.

Nov. 4' 8° A. m. 2 other leaves with places brown or decayed specks— I suspect 5th leaf with tendency to do.

Nov 5th There certainly is 1 little brown speck on the 5th leaf

― 7 now 4 brown specks; so I may date from Nov 5th —

Run all the observation on all the leaves together & say many blooms sponged off & say that I cd not succeed in keeping for more than 2 or 3 days spheres of salt-water on leaves same spot, so perfect is the protection.

Nov. 7th

N.B In all the leaves the brown marks caused by the salt-water utterly decay

Mertensia maritima — 1877

Oct. 3d— 11° 30' Sponged 6 leaves young & put salt water on 3 & fresh on 3, but I think I sponged the latter too hard for became brownish in parts immediate. — Also splendid spheres on 2 young leaves with leaden wire. — Bloom very good (experimentise on bloom.)

Oct 13 one leaf with salt, now brown specks, but it may have been injured by rubbing

(Oct 15'. I doubt whether any real injury from fresh water, though 2 leaves a little blackened, I believe from being rubbed too hard.)

(Oct 19th do. conclusion.)

(Oct 18th a 2d leaf injured by salt)

(19th margin quite rotten)

(Oct 19th I think 3d leaf with spot yellowish.

― 25 2 or 3 brown specks & whole leaf looks flaccid.

29th bro greatly decayed where salt-water lay—

Sponge another set with tepid water
