Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Amphicarpaea Monoica — Young seedling only 2 leaves, each with 3 leaflets sleep in exactly same manner as Erythrina, that is bend all 3 leaflets vertically down. The petiole of leaf bends greatly downwards 45°. (N.B It was very clear that leaflets turned their edge to sun when shining brightly.) (Light) (Used)

Sept 1'— During day petioles formed with vertical axis or stem an angle of 115° [-] 90 [=] 25 & at 8° 30; P.m. of same day only an angle of 58° with axis, so had fallen through an angle of 57°. (Climbing Plant) [sketch] 90 [-] 58 [=] 32

Sept 5th syringed 2 leaves with water 88°-89° — striking the leaflets chiefly from below & laterally, & the leaflets became greatly depressed, almost in position of sleep. — I suspect petioles fall. —

Sept 6th a leaf had had petiole 54° with stem above— shook it for 3' with a little twig the terminal leaflets which had been nearly horizontal fell into highly inclined position; descended & petiole now was now 79° with stem, so had fallen 25°. The lateral leaflet did not fall much, but they were directed vertically to the sum.
