Feb. 1st. 43. - Sounding presented to Royal Soc by Capt Belcher.

several from 20. 19. 26 fathoms brought up bits of shells & corallines & rounded particles - one at 71 was marked "rock"

Sounding at Tahiti of 21. fath. showed same kind of bottom. Some soundings taken at Tahiti at immense depth curious to know position to ascertain outline of bottom.

Boring from 35 feet brought up fragments of coral & largish shells, & some bits cemented together. the lower one all sand.
