On the origin of Species 5th Ed. 1869

(Keep)

Twice on page 453 & three times on p. 478 the words Cape de Verde ─ The Portuguese named a cape on the W. coast of Africa "Cabo Verde" the Green Cape & the islands that lie near it "Ichas do Cabo Verde" Cape Verde Islands

Sailors knowing there was a do or a de some where inserted it between Cape and Verde where it is entirely destitute of meaning─

P. 292. "But we have not yet touched the climax of the difficulty"─

P. 521 "Such changes reach their climax"

Climax means a ladder ─ the steps leading to a higher point, & is therefore the wrong word to employ in these passages where chuf.─ or acme, or maximum is meant.

All used 1875.

[A50v]

P 190. "but I have separately noticed in works on natural history that where …. that it has also been variable─

One that is superfluous.

P. 251. "Although the belief that an organ so perfect as the eye could have been formed by natural selection is more than enough to stagger one." …

It is suggested that as stagger is neuter verb it ought not to be employed in this manner, in a grave treatise at least.

─ A man staggers under a heavy burden. He causes another man to stagger under his blows.

P. 509 ─ "hence they are reduced like most weak creatures to trickery and dissimulation" ─ Does not this expression unfit the exercise of a Will? and are not the changes by which mimicry is carried out altogether independent of the animals work, being the work of natural selection acting on involuntary variations─
